Every Easter for 59 years, Leeton has celebrated the rice industry within their region. For a few years now some friends have been asking me to visit. This year with assistance from Leeton Tourism and the Easter in Leeton Hot Air Ballooning committee I was able to attend the 2016 event.
Leeton is an easy drive from Canowindra, it was just over 3 hours and I had arrived in Leeton.
The first event I did not want to miss as part of this festival was the McDonalds street parade which occurs on Easter Saturday at 1pm. I arrived and checked into the Historic Hydro Motor Inn. Located within one hundred metres of the main street any concerns that I would have about getting near the parade were allayed literally in a 3 minute walk.
There was a steady flow of emergency service vehicles, floats, balloonists and community organisations taking part and it took more than an hour to make its way up the main street and the sidewalks were packed with locals and visitors.
The balloonists add an unusual touch to this parade with the intermittent explosions of gas from their burners. I did have some fun during the parade with the balloonists by surprising them by being there.
The party then continued to Mountford Park for more family friendly entertainment and the announcement of the Sunrice Festival Ambassador Competition.
